Ocean Elders was created to be a locus of collaboration in the field of ocean conservation. By working with and leveraging the work of other ocean organizations, Ocean Elders influences governments and business decision-making to stimulate the protection and preservation of marine ecosystems.
At the core of our efforts is the active championing for the creation or expansion of marine protected areas. We believe that marine protected areas are critical to both the protection and the recovery of marine ecosystems from human impacts. To support these efforts, we have used a number of approaches to leverage the collective influence of the Ocean Elders to encourage government and business leaders to take action. In February 2017, Ocean Elders released its Five Year Impact Statement summarizing the results of the organization’s advocacy efforts since its founding.
