Many of our Ocean Elders lead vital research and public engagement efforts around the world to enhance understanding of the ocean. We are pleased to help elevate awareness of these efforts as well as those of our partners in order to bring greater attention to the need to protect and conserve our marine ecosystems.
Conceived and supported by Dr. Frederik Paulsen, the Antarctic Circumnavigation Expedition brought scientific teams from all over the world aboard the Russian research vessel Akademik Treshnikov to enhance our understanding of Antarctica.
In April 2018, the Bulletin of Marine Science published a special issue on Cuba’s marine ecosystems and conservation programs that was guest edited by Dr.Patricia González Díaz (University of Havana) and Dr. Joe Roman (University of Vermont).
Led by Dr. E.O. Wilson and the E.O. Wilson Biodiversity Foundation, the Half-Earth Project brings together scientific research and inspirational engagement to “conserve half the land and sea to safeguard the bulk of biodiversity, including ourselves.”
Under the leadership of Dr. Sylvia Earle, the Mission Blue team is igniting support for safeguarding special places that are critical to the health of our ocean. There are now more than 100 Hope Spots around the world but more action is needed.
Under the leadership of Nainoa Thompson, the Hōkūleʻa embarked upon the Mālama Honua Worldwide Voyage and reached more than 150 ports in 23 countries and territories to engage local communities.
Under the direction of H.S.H. Prince Albert II of Monaco, the Monaco Explorations Campaign is a three-year scientific journey that aims to raise awareness of the many threats facing the ocean today in order to promote conservation on local and international levels.
Under the leadership of President Tommy Remengesau Jr., Palau became the first country to require visitors to sign a passport pledge to act in an ecologically responsible way while visiting the island, “for the sake of Palau’s children and future generations of Palauans.”
Founded by Dr. Jane Goodall, Jane Goodall’s Roots & Shoots empowers young people of all ages to “pursue their passion, mobilize their peers, and become the leaders our world needs in order to ensure a better future for people, animals, and the environment.”
Led by Bertrand Piccard, the Solar Impulse Foundation is selecting 1,000 solutions that “protect the environment in a profitable way” and each of these solutions will be awarded the Solar Impulse Efficient Solution Label.
